Molly Pitcher was born on October 13, 1754 in Trenton, New Jersey. Her given name was Mary Ludwig, her parents were both German and owned a dairy farm. When she was 15 she was asked to leave the farm and work as a servant for Dr. William Irvine. She took this offer and moved to Pennsylvania to work. In Pennsylvania she meet a Barber named William Hays, they fell in love and became married. Shortly after this William hays decided to join the army,( this all happened during the Revolutionary) not wanting to be separated Molly decided to come with him. Molly and her husband fought in the battle of monmouth,William's was part of the artillery and Molly had a variety of different jobs. On the hottest day of the year molly carried pitchers of water to dehydrated soldiers. To call her they would yell Molly! Pitcher! Thats how she got her nickname.
